Chapter 1: this chapter is an introduction to the story, the first two characters are introduced here. These characters are named mr. Hooper and Edmund Hooper. The story starts with the death of edmund's grandfather, they visit him and later het dies. Mr. Hooper and Edmund went to live in the house of Edmund's grandfather, it was a big ugly house made of dark, red brick, it was called Warings , there were no other houses near it. one night Edmund got out of bed. He walked across the hall and he took a key from the desk. This was the key to the Red Room, he walked to a very big door and he unlocked it. The room was like a museum, Edmund's father had been a great collector of moths and butterflies. Edmund looked in a glass case and he touched a large black moth then the moth became dark dust. The next day mr. Hooper told Edmund that someone will come to look after the house because mr.Hooper has to go to London very oft. He also told him that the one who comes here to look after house has a boy the same age as himself, he doesn't like this, he doesn't want a friend. Chapter 2: When the Kingshaws arrive Edmund throws a piece of paper out of the window which said "I DID NOT WANT YOU TO COME HERE" Charles picked up the paper and he read it, he was afraid. When the two boys first meet they have a fight because Edmund says he own's everything in the house. Edmund also tells Charles that he has to sleep in the bed in which his grandfather died, this is not true. Charles hates his mother for taking him to this house and he also dislikes the way she is smiling to mr.Hooper. Chapter 3: Charles has been at Warings now for over a week, he wanted to go away from there so he decided to go to Hang wood for a walk. During the walk he saw a very big crow, the crow flew right over his head and he ran into the corn field. The crow flew up and dived again but this time it did not land, it was a very large crow, the biggest one he had ever seen. The crow was still attacking him and Charles ran a fast as he can towards the house and then suddenly he fell. The crow landed on Charles' back and he began to scream. When Charles walked to the house and looked at it he saw Edmund standing at the window of his bedroom , watching him. Edmund teased Charles because he had been afraid of a crow. At night Charles sees something's lying on his bed, it was a dead crow which Edmund had found in one of the attics. Charles was silent and he did not cry. Edmund wanted to show Charles the Red Room, Charles was afraid of all the moths and then Edmund locked him up in the Room. He didn't shout, because then Edmund would win. Chapter 4: Charles found a room on top of the corridor, and he found dozens of dolls. He wanted this room to be his. He locked himself up in this room. Charles hated Edmund Mr. Hooper had told Edmund that he had to be friendly to Charles. Mr. Hooper told the boys that they should be playing outside because the weather was good, when mr. Hooper was a boy he wasn't allowed to go outside, so he was very pale. Now Edmund Hooper was very pale too so he rather stayed inside. Charles knew Edmund had discovered in which he usually locked himself up. Mrs. Kingshaw told Charles that he had to be very polite to Mr.Hooper. When Charles met mr.Hooper in the main staircase mr.Hooper told Charles that they could play a game of draughts together. Mrs.Kingshaw says "there friendship will be cemented by playing the games" , they used a bagatelle board to play on. After playing and after lunch charles went to his room, the one which could be locked. When he walkes to the door he sees Edmund sitting on the floor. He asked about the room, Charles was afraid of him and he gave him the key and they entered the room. Edmund immediatly saw the galleon which Charles had made. Chapter 5: Mr. Hooper and mrs.Kingshaw would go to London for a day and mrs. Boland would be at Warings to look after the boys. Charles made an escape plan, he would leave very early and take some food out of the kitchen. Mrs.Alice Boland wouldn't mis him as usual. He had almost seven pounds, he moved everything he needed under his bed while Edmund watched "Gunlaw" on the television. At four o'clock he woke up and at twenty to five he walked away. He walked via Hang Wood, it was very silent and there was guite thick mist. When he walked he noticed a wart on his finger and that remembered him of his old class. Charles found a space in the hedge and he entered Hang Wood. Chapter 6: Charles liked Hang Wood, he saw some animals and he heard some birds. He was thirsty but he didn't bring any drinks with him. When he walked he heard a sound in the bushes, Edmund came out. "what for do you want to come with me?" Charles asked. He began to walk as fast a he could because he didn't like to be alone with Edmund. After walking around for a while they find out they are lost. Chapter 7: Charles noticed that Edmund was very scared because it rained a lot and there was a heavy thunderstorm, Charles used his anorak to make a shelter. When the sun was shining again Charles heard a stream and they walked towards it. They walked next to the river and then the river changed into a pool, they went for a swim. Kingshaw had a piece of string and he used so he wouldn't get lost when he was trying to find a way out of the forest. When he came back he found Edmund lying in the stream, he had bashed his head against a stone. Charles made a fire, he was certain Edmund would die. Chapter 8: It was getting dark and they both were sitting near the fire, Charles caught a fish but it didn't taste well. Charles talked to Edmund about his parents. He says he wants his mother to be dead instead of his father, because she's the cause of his problems. Edmund started to talk in his sleep and he cried "mummy!", Charles hit Edmund twice. Charles thought he had some inner strength that Edmund didn't have. Chapter 9: Next morning they were found. Charles heard some dogs and he heard people yelling, but he didn't want to be found. He went for a swim in the stream. When he lay in the water naked he saw a man which took them back to Warings. Chapter 10: Edmund blamed Kingshaw for everything that had happened and he also told Mr.Hooper and Mrs.Kingshaw believed that Charles pushed him in the water. They believed all of this was Charles fault and Edmund just followed him. Charles says he wishes Edmund to be dead. He was sent to his room. When he walked Edmund kicked him hard. Later his mother told him she wanted to tell him something, but not now. He thought it had something to do with the coming marriage, which Edmund told him. Chapter 11: Mrs. Kingshaw told Charles that he would go to the same school as Edmund, which wasn't St. Vincent. They went to the same school together now. Charles wanted to run away again, he ran to a shed. When he was inside the door slammed shut, and he heard the click of the padlock. Edmund closed the door, there was no light in the shed. When he heard the sound of a truck driving away, he paniced a little bit. He fell asleep. He woke up when he heard a voice call his name it was Edmund, he said he had the key and Charles started to yell at him. Edmund told Charles that he had a lot of friends in school, and they would do everything he said. Charles started to weep. Chapter 12: They all went on a sort of familytrip. They went to Leydell castle. It was a castle ruin and beside it was a lake. While Joseph and Helena went to the lake Edmund and Charles went to the ruin, only Charles climbed on the ruin and when he was on top of it he said:" I'M THE KING OF THE CASTLE". Edmund wanted to go to the dungeons but he didn't there to go down, his face was green-whites he peed in his jeans. Charles knew he was het King, now he could easily kill Edmund now, but he decided to help him. When Charles reached out his hand Edmund took a step backwards and fell. Chapter 13: It took a long time before Edmund hit the ground. A lot of people cam and an ambulance arrived, nobody took notice of Charles, who was still high up the ruin. Charles thought Edmund was dead, he once wished this to happen. Helena and Charles drove to Warings in Joseph's car, while they drove Helena didn't say anything. Charles said he didn't push Edmund. Helena was ashamed of Charles. She said"climbing is oke as long as you're not afraid. At night Charles had a dream, he ran through a long tunnel to escape from everybody. When he woke up he found out he ran to his mother's bedroom. Helena and Joseph told him Edmund wasn't dead. Chapter 14: Helena said she wanted to go to the hospital and she wanted Charles to come with her. Charles said he didn't want to visit Edmund. Charles hated the voice Helena put on fot talking about Joseph. Charles said to Helena he wished Edmund to be dead. Edmund lay in the Memorial Hospithal with his broken leg, He played snakes and ladders with Helena. Charles went quietly outside. He walked to a church and went in, he knelt down and said to God he was sorry. Suddenly someone said he wasn't supposed to pray there. It was a boy named Anthony Fielding, he knew that Charles lived with the Hoopers. They went to a Fielding's house, they saw a cow calving on the farm of Fielding. When he went home Helena told him that Edmund would come home tomorrow. Chapter 15: Edmund was at home in his bed, he had a broken leg, two of his ribs were cracked and he had a concussion. Edmund said it was all Charles' fault. Charles was afraid of Edmund's friends when they would go to school. He had only been beaten up once in his life. Edmund found out that Charles had made a new friend, Edmund always found out everything what Charles tried to keep secret. Charles and Joseph go to London to buy a new school-uniform. They travelled 1st class to London. Joseph told Charles a lot of facts about London, Charles replied "We lived in London". When they came home Charles saw that Edmund was playing with his model. He was very angry to Joseph and Helena, Joseph struck him across the cheek. Charles walked to Edmund who didn't want to give the model back and then he broke it. Helena said to Charles "You should be very ashamed of yourself". Chapter 16: Joseph was very angry because he didn't know anything about Helena's past. He thought about this because an old friend of Helena called. Helena said "Oh, I have not quite make my mind about the future". Edmund told Charles that there parents were going to mary. When he was alone he cried about this. Helena had met mrs.Fielding, Charles didn't like this, he didn't want Anthony to come to Warings, but he did. Edmund showed Anthony the moths, Anthony wasn't afraid of them. Edmund teases Charles in front of Anthony. Anthony and Edmund walked to the farm to see a new tractor, Charles didn't come with them. Charles went to Edmund's room and he burned his battle chart, he was very afraid now. Chapter 17: When Edmund came back from the Fielding's farm he didn't say anything about the disappearance of the battle chart. It was the night before the wedding and night before the 1st schoolday. Charles woke up, he found a piece of paper which said "Something will happen to you, Kingshaw". He had nightmares, when he woke up early in the morning he walked away into the woods. He lay down in the stream, he took deep breath and it was his last. When everyone went to look for him they all followed Edmund, he knew exactly where to look. When he saw Charles he thought: this is because of me, and he felt good about it. main characters: Edmund Hooper: 11 years old, lives at Warings together with his father Joseph. Edmund terrorizes to get him out of HIS house. Charles Kingshaw: 11 years old, red hair, only son of Helena Kingshaw. He is beeing terrorized by Edmund Hooper, this finally stops because Charles commits suicide Mr. Joseph Hooper: 51 years old, widow, he knows he failed as a father to Edmund. He used to be an ambitious banker. He marries Edmund's mother Helena Kingshaw. Mrs.Helena Kingshaw: 37 years old, widow, She never realizes that Charles is beeing terrorized by Edmund, She has failed as a mother. Theme: The evil that is an aspect of all people, also of children, will come to the surface under certain circumstances, and as a result a lot of harm is done. The lack of communication between parents and their children. Structure of the story: The story is told in chronological order. Story teller: Told by someone out the story who knows everything about everybody. Type of novel: It is a novel of character with many thriller-like elements in it. C. Classification of the text:
