Nanak (Click to select text)
This first god, or what they called Guru, was Nanak. Nanak was born in the year 1469 in a village known as Talwandi. Later it was changed in honor of him, it was called "Nanak's Place". His parents were common villagers, his father was a Hindu. When Nanak was 7, he would ask his teacher about the True Name of God. He studied Persian at the age of 9. Many people thought that he preferred a life of quiet meditation and religious devotion. They felt supernatural powers were with him in difficult situations. But his family felt he was useless and a disgrace to their family. Nanak became unhappy. Then one day after bathing, Nanak disappeared into the forest, he was taken in a vision to God's appearance. Nanak was offered a cup on nectar, which he accepted. God told him ," I am with thee, I have make thee happy, and also those who shall take thy name. Go, and repeat Mine, and cause others to do likewise. Abide uncontaminated by the world. Practice the repetition of My Name, charity, ablutions, worship and meditation.... My name is God, the primal Brahma. And thou at the divine Guru." Three days later, Nanak returned home. He gave all his belongings to the poor. They believed that he was possessed with an evil spirit. A priest later broke that spell. Later, Nanak took Mardana, a Mohammedan, as a servant. With him as a musical accompanist, Nanak started to deliver more widely about the disciples of the One true God of all people, both rich and poor. Once, Nanak put on a mangocoloured jacket, over which he threw a white sheet. He had a hat of a Muselman, Qalandar, while he wore a necklace of bones, and he imprinted a saffron mark on his forehead in the style of Hindus. This was evidence that he wanted Hindus and Mohammedan to accept the religion. He wanted them to feel free to try another faith. The two of them traveled to preach and sing together, all over India. This visited famous places of Hinduism, Kurukshetra, Harwar, Panipat, Delhi, Brindraban, Gorakhmata, Benares, the Brahmaputra River, Puri and the Temple of Jagannath, and the Himalaya Mountains. The two then went on to different part of Asia, the two, very tired and hungry. But after this was done, they were happy and successful. Nanak used many missionary methods. When he was in prison. He preached to the Islamic officials, who then released him. When he was attacked by a group of robbers, he told them spiritual instructions, which they followed. Nanak told them to repeat the name of god and to reform their lives. Nanak told a villain to give all his belongings to the poor, he told him to have open confession and reparation for wrong. This changed his life. He continued this with many people, thus they became followers of Guru Nanak. When Nanak's incredible life came down to an end, he went to sit down under a tree. The Musalmans, who had received God's name from the Guru, said that would bury him after his death. His Hindu followers said that they would cremate him. When the Guru was invited to decide the discussion, Nanak said," Let the Hindus place flowers on my right, and the Musalmans on my left. They whose flowers are found in fresh in the morning may have the disciples of my body." Nanak then told the crowd to sing," O my friends, pray for me that I may meet my Lord." The Guru placed a sheet over him. The next morning, there was nothing found beneath it. I thought Nanak's life was a great one. He believed that we're all children of one God. I think he accomplished what he wanted to do and that was creating a new religion. He did well with that. He passed on his teachings really well and Sikhism is one of the most followed religions there are today. One of the top five. So you can say he was successful. His successor later became Angad. His son left and betrayed him. That's why he wasn't his successor. He lived a marvelous life and I hope we can all remember him for a long time.
