Romeo and Juliet- Who is to blame for their deaths? (Click to select text)
ESSAY- Romeo And Juliet. Topic-Who is ultimately to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? Is it chance, their families and the feud, Mercutio, the nurse, Friar Lawrence or are they themselves to blame. Discuss. Romeo and Juliet’s deaths are the result of the acts of many people. It can be blamed on chance, the feud, Romeo’s best friend Mercutio, Juliet’s nurse, the good Friar Lawrence or the blame can be placed directly on Romeo and Juliet’s shoulders. Chance and coincidence played a large part in the play and in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. At the beginning of the play, just before the Capulet party, Romeo finds out from a servant that his love, Rosaline, will be attending the party. If Romeo had not found out about the party then he would not have gone and he would not have met Juliet. Romeo was banished for killing Tybalt, who killed Mercutio. If Romeo had not done this then he would not have been banished and the Friar could have told Romeo personally about the plan for Juliet to take the potion. It is also chance that Friar Lawrence did not arrive in time to stop Romeo from drinking the poison. The feud between the Montagues and the Capulets also played a large part in their deaths. Romeo and Juliet could not see each other with their parent’s consent so they had to do it in secret. “If they do see thee they will murder thee.” Juliet says this to Romeo on her balcony just after the party. The feud between the two families meant they couldn’t even talk to each other. All of the fighting between the two families did not set a good example for Romeo and Juliet. In the end they would rather die and be together than stay and be apart due to their parents’ anger. Mercutio was Romeo’s best friend and the kinsman to the Prince. He was so angered by Romeo’s refusal to fight Tybalt that he did it himself, leading to his death. If Mercutio had not done this then he would not have died, and Romeo would not have wanted revenge. Romeo then would not have been banished and he could have kept on seeing Juliet in secret. Juliet’s nurse didn’t play the authority figure that she should have. The nurse was someone that Juliet trusted very much and listened to what she said most of the time. If the nurse had told Juliet to post-pone the marriage to Romeo Juliet would have listened. However, the nurse let her marry Romeo even though it was not what her father wanted. “ I think you are happy in this second match…you no use of him.” In these lines the nurse says to Juliet that she should marry Paris as Romeo has been banished and marriage to him would not work. Juliet was heart broken when she heard the nurse say these things so she went to Friar Lawrence for help. If the nurse had not pushed the marriage to Paris to Juliet, then she would no have gone to the Friar and taken the potion. The marriage of Romeo and Juliet was done in secret by Friar Lawrence. “ For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households’ rancour to pure love.” He knew the marriage would not be liked among the families, but he thought it would help stop the feud. The Friar also should have warned Balthousar about the plan, as he knew he was a friend of Romeo’s. If he had done this then Romeo would not have needed to rush to Verona and kill himself. Also, instead of giving Juliet a sleeping potion he should have just sent her with Balthousar to Romeo and then they could have been together. However, even though all these people contributed to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, they themselves have to take some of the blame too. Juliet was only thirteen years old and Romeo was only a few years older than she was. They were both too young to really know what love is and they rushed into things too quickly. They had only known each other a few hours when they decided to get married, not worrying about the consequences that would follow. “Young men’s love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” When the Friar said this to Romeo, he meant that Romeo didn’t love Juliet with his heart, he only loved her because she was beautiful. Romeo and Juliet also had very naïve minds. They believed that their love for each other would conquer over the feud. When Romeo killed Tybalt he had no control over his emotions. He was so angry and upset over Mercutio’s death that he wanted revenge. He himself killed Tybalt, not thinking about the consequences of his actions, or his marriage to Juliet and how this affected her. “O bid me leap…wife to my sweet.” In these lines Juliet said to Friar Lawrence that she would rather die than marry Paris. All during the play Romeo and Juliet prove that they do things very impulsively and are ruled by their hearts instead of their minds. Even though all these people were in some way connected to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, no one single person can take all the blame. At the time they did certain things they thought were right, not knowing that eventually Romeo and Juliet would kill themselves rather than live without each other.
