New foods In the 1920’s Australians still ate lots of meat, potatoes, and bread, but a wide variety of new foods were becoming available as food- processing technology began to take off. With the new foods there were new clever advertisements to entice everyone to buy them. Here is some of them- Vegemite, Cornflakes, Jelly and Ice Cream Vegemite- In 1923, Vegemite was first produced. It was made from spent brewers, yeast. At first the savoury spread did not appear to Australians who were accustomed to sweet spreads like Jam, Honey, or Golden Syrup. Cornflakes- In 1924, Kellogg’s Cornflakes changed the breakfast habits of the nation. Unlike Oatmeal, Cornflakes required no cooking and the new breakfast cereal was very popular. Toast and vegemite added the finishing touches to the first meal of the day. Jelly- The aeroplane jelly company introduced jelly crystals in 1928, and the company designed a new style of dessert known as the sundae, mad with ice cream and jelly. Ice Cream- For most of the 1920’s, Ice Cream was a special treat available from picture theatres and some restraints. Some people made ice cream at home by churning a custard-lime mixture in a drum evert few hours.
