Patton (Click to select text)
When people thing of World War II many things come to mind: Gas Chambers, Nazis, "Japs", and General George S. Patton. George S. Patton is one of the most controversial issues of World War II. People have called him a great and heroic man, while others called him a pre-madonna. No matter which view you have of Patton one thing is true, Patton played a significant part in the Second World War. George Patton was a descendent of a wealthy Virginia family. [Patton R.] Patton was born in 1885, in San Gabriel, California. In 1909, He graduated from West Point. It was afterwards that he started his career in the military. In 1916, He was an aide to General. Pershing during the punitive expedition to Mexico. [Biography] In 1917, Pershing and Patton travel to France where they learned how to use the newest weapon of war, the tank. [Biography] This would play a major significance in the up coming war. The American's first battle with Rommel, the desert fox, was a disaster. The American forces needed a leader who could whip the troops into a fighting machine. That man was Patton. Patton took control of the Second Armored Division, in January 1942. [Biography] When he learned, that Rommel's forces were going to ambush his troops, through an intercepted message, Patton staged his own ambush. This was the first American victory in Northern Africa. The Allied forces, Gen. Montgomery, and Gen. Patton, had divided and destroyed the German North African Core. Patton recommended a plan used by the Ancient Greeks for the invasion of Italy. Patton wanted to lead the attack on Sicily. This plan was rejected. Montgomery would lead the invasion on Sicily. The goal was to capture Messina Patton, In charge of the seventh Army, and Omar Bradley in charge of the second Armored Division would cover Montgomery's flank. Montgomery ended up taking Patton's road due to resistance. This allowed Patton to capture Palermo. After Patton captured Palermo, he received a message telling him not to take Palermo. [Bluemenson] Patton Respond, "Ask them if I should give it back" [Bluemenson] Patton now was run a race to see who would take Messina first, Patton or Monty. Along the way, Patton almost ends his career. He slapped a solider with "battle fatigue". [Biography] He informed the solider that he would not have a yellow belly discresasing his tent of honor. Patton was forced to apologize to the solider he slapped, the doctors involved, and to the seventh army as a whole. Monty entered Messina thinking he was the first to arrive. During his Military prade through the city, He found Patton and the seventh army waiting for him. Patton had won the race to Messina. After the Invasion of Sicily was complete, Patton was removed from the commanding officer to the seventh army. German Commanding Officers felt that Patton was the General that would lead the invasion on Europe. The Allies used this in there D-Day deception. The German felt that the invasion would come directly across the channel at Calais not at Normandy. The Allies let rumors let that Gen. Patton had been place in charge of the invading army. The allies even created a fake base with blow up tanks and sounds of tanks moving being played through the P.A. system. On D-day when the Normandy invasion occurred the reason the Germans didn't move there armor divisions from Calais was they thought Normandy was just a diversionary tactic and still was waiting for the invasion from Patton. [Blumenson] After D-Day, the Third Army was formed with Patton in charge. March 1945, Hitler planed his last great offensive, The battle of the bulge. Hitler sent all his forces to attack the weak middle of the fronts. Allied positions one after another were overwhelmed and overrun. Bastone was held by the 101st Airborne, but with no supplies and no replacement soldiers, they would not hold long. At an allied staff meeting plans on how to rescue these men were discussed. Patton proposed he would charge into the "battle of the bulge", approx. 100 miles away in 3 days. He was one day late due to weather. Patton astonished the world; his army had pressed through tough resistance and relieved the 101st Airborne at Bastone. [Blumenson] After Berlin was captured and the war officially over, Patton want the Allies to attack Russia, while the equipment was still over here. His anticommunist comment found Patton relived of his command of the Third Army. Shortly afterwards on December 9, 1945, Patton was severely injured in a car accident. Twelve days later he died. [Biography] After his death, many books and a movie were made about Patton keeping the interest alive for the next generation. Patton, produced in 1971, portrayed the General as an American folk hero. The film showed the things he was known for his ivory-handled pistols, racy language, and intemperate manner. He is also regarded as one of the most successful field commanders during World War II.
